An Akwrd Review: Folded Lessons: Kehlani’s Masterclass in R&B by ZAi

An Akwrd Review: Folded Lessons: Kehlani’s Masterclass in R&B by ZAi

The 37 Second Reel That Left Em Gagged…

The scene opens with dramatic, cinematic type music that melts into this smooth, airy, intimate R&B beat. The kind that feels like late night honesty. Or the urge for closure..

And then she appears.

Kehlani steps into frame wearing a fitted black dress under warm, teasing almost flirty flashes of light.

Diamonds catching every spark. Rings that say, “I am the prize… PERIOD!”

Her signature tattoos are on full display…

The camera eases in and out like it’s worshipping her.

Slow and steady…

Steady and slow…

Every angle lands like a Vogue cover.

A last pose… a breath… and then the beat cuts, screen fades to black…

She captions this reel on Instagram, very simple…

“new music, anyone? 🧳👔”

This was May 27, 2025.

And trust, the people were starving for new Kehlani.

They didn’t have to wait long, because just 14 days later, the world got fed.

The single was called “Folded.”

And in that moment, R&B didn’t just get a new song…

It got a revival.

Why “Folded” Hit the Way It Did

Kehlani didn’t just release a record, she released a statement.

A real R&B record.

3 minutes and 57 seconds of cohesive, evolving verses that actually say something.

A hook that grabs you and pulls you into the story and you don’t want it to be over.

And in the year of our Lord 2025, she gave us a bridge.

A fucking BRIDGE!

Bruhhhh a bridge in TRUMPS economy!

The song resonated so deeply with fans, peers, OGs, and even casual listeners.

So much so that it sparked something rare,

an entire EP of “Folded” covers performed by R&B greats like Brandy, Toni Braxton, Mario, JoJo, Tank, and Ne-Yo, respectfully titled the “Folded (Homage Pack).”

Listennnnn when the greats stop what they’re doing to honor a new record?

Likeeee Toni THEE Braxton!!!! Excuse me?!!!

I’m sorry, but that’s fuckin iconic!

You don’t see Cyndi Lauper fucking Kate Bush covering Chappell Roan…

The Structure Is the Secret Sauce

Kehlani, Andre Harris, Donovan Knight, Miloš Angelov, Khristopher Riddick-Tynes, Darius Scott, and Dawit Wilson clearly walked into that studio with intention. It’s very obvious they’ve been paying attention to what R&B fans have been saying for years and not just hearing the critiques, but truly listening. And they answered with the pen. Kehlani tapped into her grown R&B bag, delivering not only the vocals but a level of songwriting that hits exactly where the genre’s been craving.

“Folded” returns to a classic R&B architecture,

It starts with an actual intro, a build up. The record is filled with beautifully sung, thoughtful riffs and runs, with ad libs that shift as the story unfolds, all anchored by clean, evolving verses. A hook that anchors the whole emotional weight. And that bridge, creating a lift right when the song needs it. I love how it refuses the hip hop/rap cadence that’s taken over modern R&B. There are no lazy half melodies, or that one take whisper hookah lounge sounding shit.

Kehlani took her time.

Her ear was to the streets…

She studied… She took detailed notes and executed ever so perfectly and we ate that shit up!

And the Receipts?

Are undeniably all there Right in our face!

It’s in the charts…

Peaking at #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it Kehlani’s first Top 10 single on that chart.

#1 on Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs and on Hot R&B Songs

It’s in the streams…

Since its release “Folded” has crossed well over 268 million (global all platforms included) streams and it hasn’t slowed down.

It’s in the covers…

Beyond the official “Homage Pack,” the fan response to “Folded” was massive, over 260,000 TikTok creations alone, with countless vocal covers spreading across Instagram and YouTube. The song moved everyday listeners to reinterpret it in choirs, acoustic renditions, bedroom style studio jawns and even full marching band arrangements. When a record inspires that many people to lend their own voice to it, thats when you know it didn’t just “chart”, it touched the culture…

And it isn’t just a fan favorite or critic’s darling, it’s a legit Grammy nominated moment. The Recording Academy threw two nods its way for the 2026 Grammy Awards. One for Best R&B Performance and another for Best R&B Song.  That recognition sends a clear message that this isn’t just nostalgia or vibes. It’s a reclamation of classic R&B craftsmanship, from the writing to vocal delivery to the production as a whole, a full circle moment for a genre that needed to remember its roots. It didn’t just drop. It knocked. And now the culture’s got to answer. In the end, Kehlani didn’t just fold the damn clothes, she reminded R&B to come pick up its soul while the door was still open…

As a self proclaimed music nerd, an R&B nigga, I’m extremely excited for the future of R&B. Not only is Kehlani reclaiming the genre, but she’s surrounded by some super dope colleagues who are also shifting the culture and giving us solid R&B records. Leon Thomas and Summer Walker, in particular, are returning to the roots of R&B. The vulnerability, the build ups, the lyricism, the yearning, the storytelling, the vocal range. They’ve all got it. They know who they are as people first, which translates perfectly when they present who they are as artists to us. I can’t wait to see what comes next. The genre of R&B that I grew to love is back, and it’s in good hands. These are the R&B “children” that the legendary,

“The Voice”

Whitney Houston,

sung about in back in 1986.

“I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”

They’ve been taught well and are now leading the way…
